‘A Day in the Life’ – Edel Murphy
In the first of this special blog series, we talk to Edel Murphy , Abtran’s new Head of Talent Acquisition to find out what drives her, inspires her and what her day-to-day role means for everyone working at Abtran.
“I’d probably describe myself as outgoing, hard working and a tad gregarious,’ Edel laughs. “And I’m a big fan of change. Since joining Abtran just over three months ago, I’ve found the people I’ve engaged with very helpful and friendly. From the HR team to the ladies on reception and the guys working on the IT Service desk, everyone has gone out of their way to make sure I was warmly welcomed.
Of course with new leadership on board, this is a time of great change for Abtran. And a big part of my role is to champion change and to ensure we recruit people who are the best fit for our culture and service ethos. Since joining Abtran, I’ve found so many positives to working here. For instance, the working hours are very sociable which creates a great work-life balance. There’s also a fantastic high tenure of people, many of whom have been with the company for more than ten years. I’m really passionate about promoting these positives both in the way we recruit and tell our story from an internal and external perspective.
Abtran has a fantastic story to tell and while we’ve come a long way, I think the big focus now is about hiring as well as retaining great people. From a talent acquisition perspective, this goes to the way we engage from the very first point of contact right through to the application, assessment and interview experience.
From a training and induction perspective, it’s also about thanking our new people for choosing Abtran and explaining why their role is so important to the business. Abtran gives people the opportunity to gain great work experience across a range of exciting and dynamic accounts. And I think it’s very important that we share that. While career progression is something we’re very good at, the opportunity to learn and develop new skills is a really empowering differentiator for new people joining our company.
Of course my role doesn’t begin and end with recruitment. I’ll be checking in regularly to find out how our new people are getting on, particularly during their first few days at Abtran. And Aoife O’Neill has been doing fantastic work both in the way we communicate and engage our people internally to how we share our story through Abtran’s digital channels.
In the day-to-day, one routine that’s very important for my team is our group huddle. Every morning, we take a few minutes to get together to discuss the priorities of the day. This means we really listen to each other and can offer extra support where needed.
Another aspect of my day-to-day role is working in close partnership with Resource Planning and Operations to really understand their vision and requirements and how we can take that forward.
We’ll also be very involved in the weekly Induction training sessions. Every Monday will be about meeting and greeting our new people and making sure they have a really positive on-boarding experience. Outside of the training sessions, we’ll be taking them for coffee, lunch and inviting Operations to come along to introduce themselves and say hi.
Of course, Abtran has grown into a big company and I’m really looking forward to getting to know the teams across all of our business sites and to understanding how we can work together to build an even stronger sense sense of culture and alignment. Another central part of my day-to-day role is promoting the company externally from the design of new materials to representing the company at events and career fairs. We’re also working on the design of a new Careers section on the Abtran web site and developing a new applicant tracking system, which will make it easier for people to apply online.
On a personal note
I’m really excited about the changes we’re going through at Abtran and to have the opportunity to build and lead a new team from the ground up. On a personal note, I’ve always had a very strong work ethic and seem to be incapable of standing still! As well as a background in Talent Acquisition and HR, I’ve run a catering company, opened two restaurants as well as being active in the local community, serving as a director and a voluntary member of Tramore Development Trust, a not for profit organisation based in Tramore, Co Waterford.
I’m also a Mum of four and it’s hard to believe that my youngest son will soon be fleeing the nest and heading off to college. I’m originally from Kilkenny and am big into animals and have more cats than I’d like to share! I also like to read crime & fantasy novels and am a big fan of Harry Potter films and the Bones TV series, which I’ve seen with my extended family.
At the end of the day, People are my passion and I’m super excited to be here. While Abtran is a big place, I’m eager to learn from everyone here and would be thrilled if you could pop by the office or stop me in the corridor the next time you see and say ‘hi’.”
